Frequently Asked Questions

Our mission is to ensure every hero is equipped with the knowledge and support they deserve. Below are the most common inquiries regarding our programs.

What are the primary eligibility requirements?

We serve women veterans who have been honorably discharged and have been diagnosed with a service-connected disability. Each applicant is evaluated on their lifestyle and ability to maintain a service dog's health and training standards.

How long does the application process typically take?

The process from application to pairing generally takes between 6 to 18 months. This ensures we find the absolute best match between a veteran's specific needs and a dog's natural temperament and skillset.

Is there a cost associated with receiving a service dog?

Service Dog Nation provides service dogs and initial team training at no cost to the veteran. Our program is fully funded through community donations, grants, and sponsors who value the service of our women veterans.

What kind of training and support do you provide after pairing?

We offer a lifetime commitment of support. This includes annual re-certifications, access to advanced training workshops, and membership in our peer sisterhood network to ensure the team continues to thrive long after the initial pairing.

What breeds of dogs do you typically use in the program?

We primarily utilize Labradors and Golden Retrievers for their stability, work ethic, and adaptability. Occasionally, we work with specialized breeds if a veteran's specific medical condition requires unique physical characteristics.

How can I support Service Dog Nation if I am not a veteran?

You can advocate for service dog public access rights, donate to our training fund, or volunteer at our headquarters. Spreading awareness and supporting our fundraising events directly impacts the number of veterans we can serve each year.
